This production came to Broadway after an out-of-town tryout at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Reviews there were mixed, but with a first-class creative team on board and a few months to iron out the wrinkles, a Broadway success seemed a pretty decent bet.
Broadway critics have now spoken, and while the verdict on the show's artistic merits remains mixed (all admired the performances, some enjoyed the score and the choreography, most found the feminist/populist story diverting but silly), the show is certainly a crowd-pleaser.
