Set in small town Indiana in the early 40s, "A Christmas Story" follows the bespectacled Ralphie Parker's desperate quest to ensure that an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle ends up under his Christmas tree.
The film version of "A Christmas Story," based on the stories of radio humorist Jean Shepherd (who also provided the film's narration), was largely overlooked when it was released in 1983. Thanks to annual broadcasts on the TBS cable network (sometimes in a 24-hour marathon format), the film has become a holiday classic.
The creative team for the stage adaptation is headed by veteran director John Rando ("Urinetown") and choreographer Warren Carlyle ("Finian's Rainbow"), and the show features songs by newcomers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Pasek and Paul were responsible for the songs in the Off-Broadway musical "Dogfight," which was a modest success at Second Stage earlier in 2012.
