Disney’s second Broadway effort, this is a teen-friendly telling of the classic operatic story of true love.
Closing Date at the Palace Theatre: September 5, 2004.
The great Egyptian hero Radames sends the captured Nubian princess Aida as a gift to the Egyptian princess Amneris. Then, as he prepares to marry the vain and shallow Amneris, he falls completely in love with Aida, and is finally forced to choose between love and life.
New songs from Elton John and Tim Rice (replacing Verdi's score, which might have been somewhat less popular with the teenagers) combine with a knockout performance by a young and enthusiastic cast in this crowd-pleasing and visually stunning Disney concoction, which premiered in early 2000. A prime example of the new breed of heavily amplified Broadway tuners, it features a long series of spotlit, soulful pop anthems played out against a brilliantly colored stage.
Casting News: Deborah Cox will play the title role through 9/5 (she doesn't play Tuesday nights & Wednesday matinees). Original leading man Adam Pascal has returned to the show. Micky Dolenz ("The Monkees") plays a supporting role through September.
