Running since March 2010 A well-received new musical featuring the songs of the rock trio Green Day, directed by Michael Mayer, the Tony-winning director of "Spring Awakening."
The story, in brief....three suburban twenty-somethings seek redemption in a world filled with frustration. One ventures to the big, bad city; another signs-up for a tour of duty in the Middle East; and the third makes an unplanned detour toward domestic bliss.
Green Day won two Grammys for the groundbreaking rock opera "American Idiot." Every song from that album (including "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends") and a few other Green Day hits (including "Time of Your Life") are incorporated in this production.
NYC critics, some of whom embraced the show’s 2009 production at Berkeley Rep, were largely enthusiastic. All lauded the powerful songs, the striking visual elements (including considerable use of video), and the immensely-talented, hyper-energized cast, and most thought these strengths more than compensated for the 90-minute production's remedial plot and lightly-sketched characters. Charles Isherwood of the NY Times called the show "a pulsating portrait of wasted youth" that "is as invigorating and ultimately as moving as anything I’ve seen on Broadway this season."
A couple of warnings - the show is very loud, and, due to strong language and simulated sex and drug use, it may not be appropriate for pre-teens.
