Sondheim's jaunty and jarring musical about the American presidential assassin makes its Broadway debut. One of the big winners at the 2004 Tony Awards.
Closing Date at Studio 54: July 18, 2004
Staged in the grunge and faded gilt of the old Studio 54, this cheerfully macabre musical about presidential assassination is a good buy for folks looking for a challenging (and fun) evening of theatre. Stephen Sondheim’s score is a veritable history of American music, ranging from the Civil War “Ballad of Booth” to a soft rock duet between John Hinkley and Squeaky Fromme, and the Roundabout’s deliberately garish and rough-hewn production casts a penetrating (if unflattering) light on each assassin’s mind, one after the other.
Cheerfully narrated by Neil Patrick Harris (the artist formerly known as “Doogie Howser, MD”), the plot builds to a fateful scene one afternoon in the Texas Schoolbook Depository.
The house opens an hour before each show, so you can come early and have a beer or two at your seat.
2004 Tony Awards: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Cerveris), Best Orchestrations, Best Lighting.
(Potential ticketbuyers should know that the show – written in 1991 - features a disturbed character in a Santa Claus suit who talks about his plans to hijack a 747 and fly it into the White House.)
