The London mega-musical about a star-struck Bollywood actor comes to the Great White Way. (Based on an idea by Andrew Lloyd Webber.)
Closing date at the Broadway Theatre: January 1, 2005
Shaka-laka, baby. Deep in the East Village, there are small, cheap Indian restaurants festooned with thousands of tiny lights, glittering bunting, and plastic Hindu gods. And if you spent $14 million to make a Broadway show with the same kitschy-but-goodhearted feeling, this is what you’d get. Alternately gleefully exuberant and bathetic, the show tells the story of a young low-caste aspiring actor (working as a tour guide to pay the bills) as he makes his dream of “Bollywood” stardom a reality.
The NYC critics were unkind, pointing out a saccharine sappiness in the telling of the story. But the big numbers here (mostly in the second act) are unquestionably the brightest and most joyful in town, and the fearless cast’s goodhearted aplomb is a heartening reminder that this is a city of more than one mind.
Casting News: Tamyra Gray (from "American Idol") joined the show 11/9.
Family Rundown: This show is similar to Les Mis, Mamma Mia & Thoroughly Modern Millie - nothing too objectionable, and visually compelling enough to keep older kids interested. (But you'd do best to explain the concept of a eunuch beforehand.)
