From downtown's Public Theater, a new work from Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie) about the civil rights struggles of the 1960's.
Closing Date at the Eugene O'Neill: August 29, 2004
Those parts of the city that still buzz about theater were buzzing through the winter about last fall’s downtown production of this new musical. Kushner is well known to Broadway after his Angels cycle of plays, and director George C. Wolfe (who recently announced that he would step down as the head of the Public Theater) made clear that this work was his valedictory gift.
The plot centers on the relationship between Caroline, a black maid in Louisiana circa 1963, and Noah, the son of the Jewish family she works for. In their efforts to understand beyond circumstance, they try to come to terms with a changing world.
This melancholy evocation of sorrowful times (up to and including our own) is definitely the high-culture musical of the season, a good buy for in-town audiences and theatergoers looking for a challenging evening.
