The family-friendly musical-comedy confection chugs into one of Broadway's largest theatres - direct from London (but with a new American cast).
Closing Performance at the Hilton Theatre: December 31, 2005
If the kids are cringing at the prospect of the ‘medicine’ of live theatre, this heaping spoonful of sugar should more than make the evening a rousing success. Expect spectacular costumes and settings, a cast of entertaining caricatures, and a piece of scenery (yep, the car) so charming that it steals the curtain call.
There are a few genuine villains, though, so prepare the youngest ones to encounter a few sour streaks in the candy.
A brief outline of the plot (courtesy of the Newark Star-Ledger’s review) should give the flavor of the experience:
…the saga of Edwardian inventor Caractacus Potts, his cute twins and a legendary hunk of automotive junk known as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Once Potts get the wreck running, it demonstrates surprising capabilities to float and fly. The rulers of nearby Vulgaria, Baron Bomburst and his child-phobic bride, crave to possess the wondrous vehicle.
2005 Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical (Maxwell). 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award : Outstanding Set Design
Cast News: Erin Dilly has left the show.
Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre. Everyone must have a ticket.
