Running since July 2015 The Public Theater's critically acclaimed production of Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda's new musical explores the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton. Winner of 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
From the producers: From the creative team behind the Tony Award-winning "In The Heights" comes a wildly inventive new musical about the scrappy young immigrant who forever changed America: Alexander Hamilton. Tony and Grammy Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda wields his pen and takes the stage as the unlikely founding father determined to make his mark on a new nation as hungry and ambitious as he is. From bastard orphan to Washington's right hand man, rebel to war hero, loving husband caught in the country's first sex scandal to Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy, "Hamilton" is an exploration of a political mastermind. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton, and lifelong Hamilton friend and foe, Aaron Burr, all attend this revolutionary tale of America's fiery past told through the sounds of the ever-changing nation we've become. Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail directs this new musical about taking your shot, speaking your mind, and turning the world upside down.
Inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, the musical incorporates historical figures such as George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson.
Casting Notes: Show creator Lin-Manuel Miranda played his final performance as Alexander Hamilton on 7/9/16. Javier Muñoz, who alternated in the title role with Miranda, assumed the role full time on 7/11/16.**
Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart ("Aladdin") assumed the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson beginning 4/14.
The Off Broadway production premiered at the Public Theatre in early 2015 to universal acclaim. In his review, Ben Brantley of The New York Times said: "Historic. 'Hamilton' is brewing up a revolution. This is a show that aims impossibly high and hits its target. It's probably not possible to top the adrenaline rush. A marvel."
2016 Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Leslie Odom, Jr.), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Daveed Diggs), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations.
Exhilarating...eloquent...the show is complex in terms of its themes, melodies and rhythms. A slightly sluggish second act and some murky diction don't dim the beauty, power and poignance constantly on stage. If only every history lesson - and Broadway musical - dazzled so completely.
Joyful, kinetic, and extravagantly original...nearly every moment here is told via song - dense, syntactically dazzling compositions - and delivered by an electric cast whose mixed ethnicity feels less colorblind than color-defying.

A work of genius. The lyrics are a masterful distillation of character and circumstance, with the overall production eye-catching, ear-pleasing, and thoroughly true to history--the latter thanks to the full participation of historical biographer, Ron Chernow.
