New in 2016 A new a cappella musical that explores the hopes, dreams and struggles of several New Yorkers as they travel on the New York City subway.
From the producers: Featuring an a cappella score from the talents behind "Frozen" and "Pitch Perfect," "In Transit" is a new, modern musical bringing to life a vivid tapestry of characters and music in the city that never sleeps...or stands still. Inspired by the vibrant rhythms of life on the subway, "In Transit" follows the intertwining lives of eleven New Yorkers, all hoping to catch the express train to success, love and happiness...and the stops they make along the way.
"In Transit" was originally produced Off-Broadway in 2010 by Primary Stages. The limited run opened to positive reviews and was awarded the 2011 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble. It also had a 2012 reading and was performed in a concert version at Feinstein's/54 Below in March 2016.
With a book, music and lyrics by Academy Award winner Kristen Anderson-Lopez ("Frozen"), James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth, "In Transit" is directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall ("Anything Goes," "Nice Work If You Can Get It").
Charming...rapturously harmonious... glorious, pitch-perfect voices, set to rich and expressive arrangements. Director Marshall keeps things fluid, energetic and precise. The book is by-the-numbers, with the audience's minds moving ahead of the plot faster than a scurrying subway rodent. All the performers bring a high degree of likability to otherwise plaintive roles.
[The] 10 actor-singers plus a human-beatbox rhythm-keeper provide such a full, rich sound that you quickly forget they're unaccompanied. And while the cast is sprightly and talented, the issues their characters face are way too familiar to be interesting. Vivaciously directed, the show is so smiley-faced, there's never a doubt everyone's problems will be resolved in a positive way by the end of the evening.
