Running since: September 2009 Just opened, a new musical about a black singer and a white radio DJ who come together in the segregated South during the early days of rock 'n' roll....critics' reviews mostly good, audience reaction excellent.
From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis comes a hot new Broadway musical with heart, soul and energy to burn. She's a black singer whose career is on the rise, but who can't break out of segregated clubs. He's a white radio DJ whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. When the two collaborate, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the Golden Era of early rock 'n' roll takes flight.
The NY Daily News captured the general tone of the (mixed but mostly supportive) reviews, saying "Though it starts on a familar note and sparks deja vu at other points, "Memphis" eventually finds its own voice and beat, and wins you over with its sheer enthusiasm and exuberant performances." The show's original songs, composed by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan, was praised across the board.
Here's a 30-second promotional video with snippets from the Broadway production:
