Running since March 2010 A new musical about a 1956 recording session that brought together Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins for the first and only time.
After a successful run in Chicago, and with a score of rock hits including "Blue Suede Shoes," "Sixteen Tons," "Great Balls of Fire," "Walk the Line," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "Hound Dog", this show seemed a good bet for Broadway.
NYC critics were, on the whole, respectful but underwhelmed. Most found the straight-forward rendering of the hit songs enjoyable enough, but many would no doubt agree with the Daily News critic who wrote that "four guys alternating at a microphone isn't a Broadway musical." And while the performances by the high-energy cast of Broadway newcomers were generally deemed likable and competent, only Levi Kreis (who won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor for this performance) as Jerry Lee Lewis seemed to make much of an impression.
At only 90 minutes (including a strange, 10-minute Vegas-inspired coda tacked on at the end), this small-scale musical will be an enjoyable escape for many, but will probably feel like "Broadway Lite" to experienced theatergoers.
Here's a clip from the cast's performance at the 2010 Tony Awards:
2010 Tony Awards: Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Levi Kreis). 2010 Outer Critics Circle Awards: Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (Levi Kreis).
