Running since: March, 2006
Hollywood's legendary vine-man swings into Broadway's Richard Rodgers theatre, courtesy of this new Disney musical.

Closing Performance at the Richard Rodgers Theatre: July 8, 2007

Ah, the classic story of a boy raised by wild apes who grows up to be a civilized man and finds a nice Englishwoman to settle down with.

Usually in the theatre, the lights go down, the curtain comes up, and about a dozen folks take turns talking while standing on the ground. Not so much with this show. Disney has harnessed the minds behind Off-Broadway's De La Guarda, songwriter Phil Collins and prolific Broadway designer Bob Crowley to create a visual spectacular (the opening moments are stunning, so don't be late), with actors flying through the air, standing on the walls, and swinging on nylon "vines" through Technicolor jungles.

Now for the bad news - frequent theatregoers and theatre critics have been a little disappointed, noting that some of the traditional pleasures of the theatre (plot, character development, etc) seem to have been left behind at ground level.

But even given that the art has been given short shrift, the younger (not really youngest) ones will probably still enjoy seeing grown-ups climb on the walls and pretend to be apes. Include an intermission G&T for Mom and Dad in the theatregoing budget, and you'll all have a grand old time.

Avoid the last four rows of the Orchestra (U,V, W, X). If you're under the Mezzanine, you can't see all the action on the vines.

Disney recommends its productions for ages 6 and up. All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Parents or guardians bringing young people to TARZAN should note that it is an adventure story featuring scenes of intense action.
