Running since March 2010 A new musical based on the characters of New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams comes to Broadway, with an impressive cast headed by Tony winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth (as Gomez and Morticia, naturally).

Bebe Neuwirth will not perform Sept. 28 - Oct. 3.
In the opinion of most critics, this promising project has fallen well short of its potential, with a hokey, predictable story that seems lifted from "La Cage aux Folles" and songs so generic they could have been re-cycled from other shows.
The show is saved, to some extent, by the excellent cast, who do their best to entertain. Daily News critic Joe Dziemianowicz summed it up well, noting that after a "tasty beginning," the "rest of the show arrives....half-baked and already nibbled," but "the top-flight cast works hard to sell the material," led by Nathan Lane, who, with his "hair greased and accent set on bizarre....is a riot and carries the production with his signature silliness."
After a troubled pre-Broadway run in Chicago, the original directing team of Phelim McDermott & Julian Crouch (creators of the Tim Burton-esque Off-Broadway and London hit "Shockheaded Peter"), was replaced by veteran Broadway "show doctor" Jerry Zaks. McDermott and Crouch's scenery and costume designs (which are terrific) remain, and they continue to be credited as directors, while Zaks is credited as "creative consultant."
Charles Addams worked as a cartoonist for nearly 60 years, and the "Addams Family" characters are a very small part of his output. In fact, prior to his work on the 1964 TV show, they existed only in bits and pieces in approximately 50 of his cartoons. But as Addams developed the idea for the sitcom, the motley group of previously-unnamed characters morphed into Morticia, Fester, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley, Grandmama, Lurch and Thing, and came to be known around the globe as "The Addams Family."
