The meat-and-potatoes drama of the season is likely to be this revival of Eugene O'Neill's tragedy of old graces and new ambitions. Gabriel Byrne leads the cast.
Closing Performance at Studio 54: January 29, 2006
Not for the light of heart, but rewarding for those seeking the deeper, slightly more difficult pleasures of the theatre, this drama is set just outside of Boston in the early 1800's. An Irish immigrant (Byrne) runs an inn, but clings to memories of his own nobility and valor in the European wars. His daughter falls in love with the son of a prominent local businessman, and he is forced to somehow come to terms with a world that simply doesn't think that much of him.
O'Neill is one of the great American playwrights, and this production hews closely to the letter and spirit of the text. Expect thick Irish accents, heartfelt acting, a heartstopping conclusion - in all, an authentic, capable rendition of a real American Tragedy.
