New in 2009 NYC critics were a bit mixed on this revival of Noel Coward's classic drawing-room comedy, but they were unanimous in their love for Angela Lansbury, who steals the show as the daffy spiritual medium at the center of the story. Closes July 19th
The Broadway production of Blithe Spirit closed July 19, 2009. For current Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here.
Ms. Lansbury's castmates, including Rupert Everett as a writer who finds himself torn between his jealous second wife (Jayne Atkinson) and the mischievous spirit of his dead first wife (Christine Ebersole), were mostly lauded as well, but many critics were less kind about Michael Blakemore's direction, including the uneven pacing that plagues the production.
Interesting Side Note: The 1987 Broadway revival of this play starred Richard Chamberlain, Judith Ivey, Geraldine Page, and Blythe Danner (the marvelous actress probably best known to those under 35 as the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow).
