Tennessee Williams' famously sultry drama of plantation life in the old South is given a new spin in this production featuring African-American actors in the principal roles. (The action has been moved forward in time about a hundred years.)
James Earl Jones plays the dying patriarch, Phylicia Rashad is his charismatic wife "Big Mama", and Terrence Howard and Anika Noni Rose are the tormented and scheming young couple hoping to win the inheritance. As always with Williams, expect characters of searing psychological depth - this isn't one of the lighter evenings on the boards, though reports say that the production is very easygoing, especially in the first scenes.
You can read some excerpts of a slightly tamer version of the play here. More on the play here.
Mature Language, Adult Themes - note that this production features stronger language than is found in most published versions of the play.
