New in 2008 An Off-Broadway hit last season, Horton Foote's play comes to Broadway with its highly-acclaimed original cast largely intact. Closes 1/4/2009

For fans of the old-fashioned "well-made play" and ensemble-acting enthusiasts, this is a must-see event. With a cast of 13 headed by Elizabeth Ashley, Hallie Foote, Penny Fuller and Gerald McRaney, and set, like many of Mr. Foote's plays, in the fictional town of Harrision, Texas, the play focuses on a once-prominent family's squabble over their dwindling inheritence.
The play is funnier and more genteel than Broadway's other multi-generational family throwdown, the Tony and Pulitzer-winning August: Osage County. The critics were largely enthusiastic, with the Daily News summarizing nicely, saying "Dividing the Estate goes for laughs and succeeds, and at the same time comments on more sweeping notions of avarice, entitlement and carpetbagging karma."
About the author: 92-year-old Horton Foote is an Emmy Award, Pulitzer Prize, and Academy Award winner (for To Kill a Mockingbird in 1962 and Tender Mercies in 1983). You might enjoy Alex Witchel's 2007 NY Times Magazine feature on Mr. Foote.
