From the producers:
Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington returns to Broadway, alongside Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Viola Davis, in August Wilson’s monumental play.
Written in 1983, the play is set in Pittsburgh in the '50s. It is perhaps the best-known of the 10 plays comprising August Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle (9 of the plays are set in the Steel City), which chronicles the African-American experience throughout the 20th Century. Finished in 2005, only months before the playwright's tragic death at the age of 60, the cycle stands as one of the foremost achievements in the American theater.
The original Broadway production of "Fences" opened in 1987. It earned 4 Tony Awards that year, including Best Play and Best Actor for James Earl Jones (in the role which will now be tackled by Mr. Washington).
