The play is set in Pittsburgh in the '50s. Mr. Washington plays 53-year-old Troy Maxson, a sanitation worker and former Negro League baseball player struggling to "do right" by his family and overcome the bitterness that permeates his being.
Broadway critics were largely in accord on this production, finding it short on nuance but emotionally rewarding nonetheless. Entertainment Weekly summed it up well, saying "Denzel Washington is giving a grand, sell-it-to-the-balcony, crowd-thrilling performance" in a "buffed-to-a-sheen "Fences," buoyed by a top-shelf supporting cast and Branford Marsalis’ beautiful bluesy between-scenes music."
Written in 1983, "Fences" is perhaps the best-known of the 10 plays comprising August Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle (9 of the plays are set in the Steel City), which chronicles the African-American experience throughout the 20th Century. Finished in 2005, only months before the playwright's tragic death at the age of 60, the cycle stands as one of the foremost achievements in the American theater.
The original Broadway production of "Fences" opened in 1987. It earned 4 Tony Awards that year, including Best Play and Best Actor for James Earl Jones (in the role now being tackled by Mr. Washington).
