According to the production's press office, the play revolves around "the aftermath of a playground altercation between two boys and what happens when their parents meet to talk about it." From this seemingly minor event, Ms. Reza creates a serious (but very, very funny) play about the savage tendencies that lurk just below the surface in even the most civilized human societies.
In general, the NYC critics loved this show. Bloomberg's John Simon was among the most enthusiastic, saying the "perfect acting ensemble, brilliantly directed, provides marvels of demeanor and delivery, its precision timing and onstage deployment yielding sidesplitting returns."
Written in French and originally set in Paris, the play has been translated by Christopher Hampton (who provided the excellent translation/adaptation of Chekhov's The Seagull seen on Broadway earlier this season) and re-set in what seems to be Brooklyn, the outer-borough mecca for NYC's "bourgeois bohemian" class.
