New in 2009 Janet McTeer (as Mary Queen of Scots) and Harriet Walter (as Queen Elizabeth I) star in a production Newsday calls a "riveting showcase" for "two towering actresses." Closes August 16th
The Broadway production of Mary Stuart closed August 16, 2009. For current Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here.
Despite a new adaptation created for this production, the 200-year old play may feel a bit stodgy to some, but audiences will no doubt agree with the NYC critics that the performances by Ms. McTeer and Ms. Walter (both highly-acclaimed for the London production of this play, and now Tony nominees as Best Actress for this production) are worth a trip to the theater.
Friedrich Schiller's drama, which has been produced on Broadway on three previous occasions, is a mix of history and fantasy. One of the "imagined" scenes, a meeting between the two Queens on the grounds at Fotheringay Castle early in the second act, is a spirited throwdown, and one the highlights of the show.
This production is directed by the extremely versatile Phyllida Lloyd in only her second Broadway endeavor...the first being the smash hit musical "Mamma Mia", now in its 8th year at the Winter Garden Theatre.
