New in 2009 Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles play professor and student in the Broadway premiere of Pulitzer-winner David Mamet's play, written in response to the 1991 Clarence Thomas hearings. Closes December 6th
The Broadway production of Oleanna closed December 6, 2009. For current Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here. In his New York Times review of the 1992 Off-Broadway production, Frank Rich said the play "is an impassioned response to the Thomas hearings. As if ripped right from the typewriter, it could not be more direct in its technique or more incendiary in its ambitions."
Critical reaction to the current Broadway production (which originated in Los Angeles) has been decidedly mixed, with most reviewers admiring the direction and the performances, but many finding fault with the play. Variety said the "meticulously calibrated production can't correct the imbalance of a manipulative play that only feigns impartiality." USA Today, on the other hand, said in "the gripping new production" the play "has lost none of its provocative power and is bound to inspire animated conversations long after the curtain falls."
For the second consecutive season, Mr. Mamet will have two shows on Broadway. Also opening this fall is his new play "Race" starring Emmy-winner David Spader in his Broadway debut.
