Running since March 2010 From London's Donmar Warehouse (which brought us the outstanding "Frost/Nixon"), a new play about abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko, starring Alfred Molina as the artist. Winner of 6 Tony Awards, including Best Play. Closes June 27th.
The Broadway production of Red closed June 27, 2010. For current Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here.
Set in 1958, at the pinnacle of Rothko's career, the artist has hired a new assistant and just begun work on the biggest commission in the history of modern art. As the assistant gains the confidence to challenge him, the brilliant, vain, angry Rothko is forced to face the possibility that his crowning achievement could also be his undoing as an artist.
The production received mostly good reviews, but some critics found the play (which runs only 90 minutes without intermission) well-crafted but conventional. There was universal agreement, though, that Michael Grandage's direction is impeccable, and that Mr. Molina (who is probably best known for his roles as Doc Ock in "Spiderman 2" and Diego Rivera in "Frida") and young Eddie Redmayne (reprising his acclaimed London performance as the assistant) are absolutely superb. Both actors received Tony nominations for their performances, and Mr. Grandage was nominated for the Best Director Tony.
