Clifford Odets was one of the great playwrights of the early part of the last century - his starkly realistic work was famed for accurately capturing the argot of the streets, and the initial productions were staged by the Group Theatre, the legendary incubator of 'Method acting.'
Here, one of his classic stories - an aged, faded, alcoholic actor attempts a comeback - is assayed by some high-wattage Hollywood stars under Mike Nichols' direction.
Most critics seemed to feel that the results were a bit mixed (see Critics Ratings, below), but you don't often see stars of this magnitude working with such legendary material - all in all, this could be a very good buy, especially at a discount.
You can read some scenes from the play here.
