New in 2009
A revival of the 1927 comedy, a parody of the first family of Broadway - the Barrymores - directed by Tony-winner Doug Hughes.
Closes December 13th

The Broadway production of The Royal Family closed December 13, 2009. For current Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here.

This production has been one of the very pleasant surprises of the fall. Described by the producers as a "classic comedy of theatrical manners" and an "insightful, witty and moving valentine to the theatre," the show did not create a great deal of early buzz, but once the fine production and excellent performances were on-stage for all to see, the show began to gain momentum.

The cast is headed by the remarkable Rosemary Harris, who plays the matriarch of a family of actors. Best known in recent years as Toby Maguire's Aunt May in the Spiderman films, Ms. Harris remains in top form at the age of 82. The chance to see her graceful, nuanced performance here is worth the price of admission.

Jan Maxwell, as the reigning diva of the family, also turns in an excellent performance. In its somewhat tepid review, the NY Times noted that while the play may not be first-tier satire, "the passion at its heart, as Ms. Maxwell and Ms. Harris make so movingly clear, is forever."
