New in 2007 A rueful and witty new Irish drama from London, from the author of The Weir and Shining City. Closes 3/30/2008
Closing Performance at the Booth Theatre: March 30, 2008
If you had to pick a playwright to curse the Devil, you probably couldn't do better than to pick an Irishman, and living scribe Conor McPherson ably takes up the charge here, rendering a play that, by all accounts, makes for a very compelling evening in the theatre.
A poker game in a dilapidated house deep in a poor neighborhood of Dublin becomes the unprepossessing setting for McPherson's skillfully acted spoken drama of demon rum and a rum demon. Press reports described it as a bit heavy on the traditional literary liqueurs of Irish theatre, but if you're looking for an (ultimately) heartwarming story, this quintessentially tragicomic play has certainly won over this town's critics.
Basic plot - two brothers and their drinking buddies are joined by a mysterious, malevolent stranger for a fateful game of poker one icy Christmas Eve.
May be inappropriate for 15 and under. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
