New in 2008 From London's Royal Court Theatre, a limited run of Chekhov's drama about misguided love and misspent lives among a group of theatrical types, circa 1895.
The Broadway production of The Seagull closed December 21, 2008. For current Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here.
Most NYC critics found much to admire in this production, including Christopher Hampton's excellent new adaptation and the performance of Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient and Four Weddings and a Funeral), making her Broadway debut as the self-absorbed actress at the center of the drama. Among the most enthusiastic were Ben Brantley of the NY Times, who called it "the finest and most fully involving production of Chekhov that I have ever known."
The production is somewhat bleak, but certainly no more than Chekhov's play requires. All in all, this is a first-class production of a challenging classic, and should be high on any serious theatergoer's must-see list.
Interesting side note: Mackenzie Crook, the hilariously geeky Gareth Keenan from the British version of televison's The Office (which, as you may know, was the original), will play the young playwright Konstantin Treplyov in this production.
