New in 2008 A new comedy based on the 1942 film of the same name, featuring a veteran Broadway cast and directed by three-time Tony nominee Casey Nicholaw.
Closing Performance at the Friedman Theatre: November 16, 2008
From the production's press office:
At the Polski Theatre in 1939 Warsaw, famed stage couple Josef and Maria Tura are about to open yet another smash with their theatrical troupe. As the German invasion gets underway, the theatre is closed by the censors, forcing the troupe to face desperate times. But when a handsome young bomber pilot enlists their help to catch a spy, what is a group of actors to do? This hilarious black comedy is an ingenious commentary on the World War II era and an inspired tribute to the timeless joys of the theatre.
Interesting side note: Films based on plays are fairly common, as are stage musicals based on films, but plays based on films are very rare (in fact, we can't think of any others...if you can, please let us know).
