Running since March 2013 Tony-nominees David Hyde Pierce, Kristine Nielsen, and Sigourney Weaver star in Christopher Durang's uproarious homage to Anton Chekhov. Nominated for 6 Tony Awards including Best Play, Best Actor (David Hyde Pierce) and Best Actress (Kristine Nielsen).
In "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," playwright Christopher Durang has taken characters and themes from Chekhov, poured them into a blender and mixed them up. The result is an absurd, hilarious romp in the tradition of his Obie-winning plays "Sister Mary Explains It All For You" and "The Marriage of Bette and Boo."
The plot: Step-siblings Vanya (Pierce) and Sonia (Nielsen) have never left the confines of their childhood home - a rambling Bucks County farmhouse. A surprise visit from their glamorous sister Masha (Weaver) and her 20-something boy toy, Spike (Billy Magnussen), throws the normally quiet household into utter upheaval.
"Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" had its premiere in late 2012 at Lincoln Center Theater's Off-Broadway space, then transferred to Broadway after a very brief hiatus.
