Grey Gardens

Grey Gardens the Broadway Musical - Grey Gardens Tickets - click for tickets
Running since: October, 2006
The eccentric musical from the author of I Am My Own Wife about two reclusive spinsters living in a great old house with a lot of cats.

Closing Performance at the Walter Kerr: July 29, 2007

The inspiration for this quirky new musical was the equally quirky cult-favorite documentary of the same name. The film stars two reclusive ladies - the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy, incidentally - as they demonstrate an enthusiastic misunderstanding of the world beyond their walls. The two recluses listen to records and the radio and the younger one dreams of being a Broadway star, but they almost never leave the mansion.

This would be a good choice for those seeking the offbeat - a fair bit of camp lightens the pathos of the shut-ins, and both actresses won praise from the critics and the cognoscenti for their work in the 2005 Off-Broadway production at Playwrights Horizons. After the show was reworked for the Main Stem, Christine Ebersole won the rave reviews of the season for her star turn, so if you see the (very capable) understudy listed as you go in the front door, reschedule if you can.

The $35 balcony tix are only available at the box office - bring the binocs and hire a sherpa, as the balcony is set very high in the Kerr.

May be inappropriate for 8 and under.
Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
