Long before American Idol, this hit Broadway musical told the tale of tryouts for the chorus of a new Broadway show.
Closes 8/17/2008

This generously staged revival of one of the longest-running Broadway musicals of all time has won praise for its simple and straightforward staging - it's a very accessible production for first-time theatregoers.

Plot: You watch some unconventional auditions for a Broadway show, where the actors are asked to tell the stories of their lives.

Interestingly, most of the original cast played themselves and told their own stories - here, the actors have been given a script, and most of the audience has either seen the movie or another production of the show, but if you're coming to to visit Broadway, this is still a good way of seeing what it does best.

The critics seemed to think it was a thin retelling (see the ratings, below), but this is perhaps one of those shows that can never rise to the level of an aficionado's memories. It's a good time. Don't expect more, and you won't have less.

Cast News: Mario Lopez ("Saved by the Bell", "Extra TV", "Dancing with the Stars") plays through 9/7, though the role is mostly offstage via microphone.

Here's a couple numbers from the show, as staged on a TV special in the early 80's:
