New in 2007 Audra McDonald stars in this musical adaptation of The Rainmaker at Studio 54.
Closing Performance at Studio 54: July 29, 2007
The play is a classic fragment of Americana - a "rainmaking" drifter arrives in a drowsy drought-stricken town and makes a little magic. The musical adaptation is by the authors of The Fantasticks, another fine example of American magic realism. Best for frequent theatregoers, it's more funnel cake than cotton candy - there's more substance to it than most musicals, but, fear not, it ain't Eugene O'Neill.
Audra McDonald stars, you may have seen her New Year's Eve concert with the New York Philharmonic on Public TV. She's joined by fellow Broadway stalwart John Cullum (Urinetown, "Northern Exposure").
Basic plot: charming Southern woman languishes in small Texas town seeking true love, enter mysterious stranger stage left.
2006-2007 Drama Desk Award (tie) - Outstanding Actress in a Musical (McDonald).
