Back when "Rent" took The Street by storm, the East Village was a hotbed of youth and counterculture. Now that you can't find a small studio apartment there for less than $2,000 per month, other areas of town are contending for the title of hipster haven - and though Brooklyn is the clear frontrunner, the upper reaches of Manhattan island are now home to many of the striving classes. Set there, this (actually quite wholesome) new tuner transfer from Off-Broadway looks to the deeper roots of the neighborhood, far, far to the south, Latin America ways, and the largely Latino culture that has emerged north of Harlem.
According to the critics, there aren't too many rough edges in this one - it's a rather wholesome and chipper take on the cultural life of Upper Manhattan, more of a feel-good evening for a family with older kids than the adventuresome night on the town for young couples.
