Running Since: October, 2008 The first Broadway revival of David Mamet's high-octane black comedy, starring Tony nominee Raul Esparza, Elisabeth Moss of AMC's "Mad Men," and Oscar-nominee William H. Macy. Closes 2/22/2009
Closing Performance at the Barrymore: February 22, 2009
First produced in 1988, Mamet's behind-the-scenes look at the cynical and greedy world of Hollywood takes on unexpected resonance in this season of 'hope vs fear' choices and economic tsunamis. Mamet's trenchant, profane dialogue is performed at breakneck speed by the excellent cast, making this 90-minute, intermission-less production one of the most dazzling pieces of theater in recent memory.
Casting update - Jeremy Piven from HBO's "Entourage" was one the original stars of this production, but withdrew due to health concerns. Oscar-nominee William H. Macy has joined the company and will play through the end of the run.
Interesting side notes: In a 1989 Chicago Tribune interview, Mr. Mamet explained the unusual title of this play, saying "on a lot of old plates and mugs you see: 'Industry produces wealth, God speed the plow.' This, I knew, was a play about work and about the end of the world, so 'Speed-the-Plow' was perfect because not only did it mean work, it meant having to plow under and start over again." Mamet's "American Buffalo" was also revived on Broadway this season. Madonna (yep, that one) made her only Broadway appearance in the original Broadway production of the play.
