Hey, big spender... Christina Applegate comes to Broadway in the classic (yet racy) 1960's Neil Simon/Cy Coleman/Dorothy Fields musical.
Closing Performance at the Hirshfeld: December 31, 2005
The winsome and chipper Ms. Applegate is the star and centerpiece of this revival, directed with aplomb by Walter Bobbie. Based on a Fellini screenplay about a goodhearted sex worker (the musical makes her a "dance hall hostess") looking for true love, the freewheeling musical-comedy is set firmly in NYC circa 1960. The real feeling of it, though, hearkens to the big musical-comedies of the 40's, given the show's original star (Gwen Verdon) and director/choreographer (Bob Fosse), who were both expert in the grand old Broadway musical traditions.
The plot is straightforward (and a bit risque) - girl loses boy, gets whisked into high society, meets a nebbishy accountant in an elevator who has to come to terms with her work as a "hostess", and then, at the moment of truth...
Well, you wouldn't want us to tell you. (And this production's ending has been changed from the original.)
Applegate injured her foot in Chicago, and the production almost didn't make it to Broadway, but at the last second, the producer announced that she would open the show as planned (another actress had played the role in the interval). She's in the show until the end of the year.
2005 Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (O'Hare).
Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
