Harry Connick, Jr. stars in this revival of the old Broadway classic about love in a time of union negotiations. 2006 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical
Closing Performance at the American Airlines Theatre: June 17, 2006
The 6/13-6/17 shows are benefit performances - everything except the face price of the ticket (up to $110) is tax-deuctible, according to the producer. Let's repeat that. According to the producer. (We don't do tax advice here.)
This 1954 Broadway musical is square-center in the middle of the great musical comedy tradition of the street. Cobbled together by legendary showman George Abbott in the midst of Ike's America, it took some risks in making union strife its centerpiece, but the evening is buoyed along by the infectious rhythms of old Broadway all the way to the happily-ever-aftering.
The Plot: The workers at a pajama factory want a raise. Management doesn't want to give them one. This being a Broadway Musical, the negotiators (Connick and Kelli O'Hara) fall in love. (Long form here.)
Kathleen Marshall, who has established herself as a real master at polishing up these old gems (her recent revival of Wonderful Town won much praise) directs and choreographs.
After generally upbeat reviews (including a rave in the Times), the theatre advises that all full-view tickets have sold out. There might be some late availabilities given the large number of multi-show subscribers, but it's likely that any such returns will be snapped up at the walk-up box office. Online, you'll be paying premium prices.
On April 28, it was announced that the show would reopen for a commercial run in the fall at another Broadway house, but on July 11, it was announced that it would instead do a national tour.
2006 Tony Awards: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography.
2006 Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Choreography.
2006 Outer Critics Circle Awards: Outstanding Choreography.
