The long-running musical comedy about an aspiring faith-based boy band plays midtown's New World Stages.
The Off-Broadway production of Altar Boyz closed January 10, 2010. For current Off-Broadway show listings and tickets, please click here.
A family-values 'boy band' from a small town in Ohio tries to make it big in the Big Apple with songs like “Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait", and comedy ensues. Tongue firmly in cheek, the revue traces their crises of faith and choreography as the kids try to make it big in the big city. Not as heavy-handed or jaded as you might think, it has gone over surprisingly well with vacationing holy-rollers (with a healthy sense of humor).
There's a minor audience-participation moment, when a young woman (usually near the right-center aisle, in an even-numbered seat) is serenaded by one of the band.
What's New World Stages? New World Stages is a converted complex of movie theaters in midtown, about a block west of the Broadway theater district. Very well-apportioned, with excellent intermission bars and very comfortable seats, it is a rental house, meaning that outside producers pay the theater a certain amount to bring their shows in, resulting in wildly varying fare, but the high rental cost tends to keep the sketchiest of the riff-raff at bay.
