Dead Man's Cell Phone

producer: Playwrights Horizons

A new play about what you'd think it would be about. Mary Louise Parker is in the cast, Anne Bogart directs.

Closing Performance at Playwrights Horizons: March 30, 2008

From the theatre:

Gordon is dead, but his cell phone lives on. When Jean (Mary-Louise Parker), an empathetic museum worker, answers his ringing phone beside her in a café, she is soon playing unwitting comforter and confessor to the man’s grieving friends and family. Before she knows it, Jean is ensnarled in the underbelly of the dead man’s bizarre life. A wildly imaginative new comedy, Dead Man’s Cell Phone is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technology-obsessed world.

No late seating (until intermission).

Through 3/30.

What's Playwrights Horizons?: PWH is a long-running off-Broadway theatre on West 42nd that focuses on the art of the playwright. The theatre develops new plays by both veteran scribes and folks just off the radish truck (admittedly, the radish truck might have made a stop at an MFA playwriting program). These shows are given productions in its new on-site state of the art theatres, with production standards equal to the best of Off-Broadway. Nothing too conceptual or provocative (though the director of this one is known for her avant-garde work) - it's usually just interesting plays, well rendered. More here.
