In the larger Off-Broadway space at City Center, Bill Cain's new bio-play about William Shakespeare and his troupe of players, directed by Garry Hynes, director of MTC's well-received 2007 Broadway production of Brian Friel's "Translations."

From the theatre:
Set in 1606 England, the play begins when King James’ right hand man commissions William Shakespeare to write a new play about the Gunpowder Plot, a recent failed attempt to blow up Parliament and the Monarchy. "Equivocation" is a bold new look at the greatest playwright ever in a drama whose contemporary parallels are unmistakable and whose laughter is abundant – a work of startling revelations and vibrant theatricality.
The play was originally produced by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and then in LA last fall at the Geffen Playhouse. Reviewing the Geffen production, Bob Verini of Variety called the play "an experience no serious theatergoer will want to miss... one of the most bracingly intelligent, sizzling theatrical American plays in a decade."
What's Manhattan Theatre Club?: One of three not-for-profit theatres that produce a season on Broadway each year, MTC also has two smaller stages at City Center, where they produce mostly modern plays (and sometimes musicals) in a fairly conventional style. More here.
