The Seafarer

This Irish play follows the familiar conventions of five Irish drunks in one room playing poker and doing a lot of drinking and talking for a couple of hours. Conor MacPherson also follows his conventions of mysticism, though less heavily than usual. The third convention of this play is the theme of the Devil contending with a human for his soul. But the direction is energetic, the acting brilliant, the dialogue crackling, the dramatic tension riveting, and the overall theatrical experience totally captivating. Even if you find Synge maudlin and O'Neill exhausting, you will enjoy this play!
