From the producers: Deaf West’s innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and longing teenagers and the adults who refuse to hear them. Directed by Michael Arden, Deaf West’s "Spring Awakening" is full of knockout performances, explosive music and soul-stirring emotion.
"Spring Awakening" sent shockwaves through Broadway in 2006, winning 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. The staging is based on the Deaf West Theatre's recent production at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, CA. The musical will be performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken English.
The cast features Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin ("Children of a Lesser God") and Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Camryn Manheim. Matlin has written four books, competed on the sixth season of "Dancing with the Stars," and has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Manheim is best know for her television roles in “The Practice" and "Ghost Whisperer."
The production floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, "It's hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West's 'Spring Awakening' is so very, very good."
Deaf West Theatre is best known outside its home base for the Tony-nominated 2003 revival of "Big River" that moved to Broadway and received a special Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre.
