Running since November 2013 A new musical based on Carole King's inspiring story, tracking her rise to stardom and featuring many of her award-winning songs.
From the producers: Long before she was Carole King, music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and had a flourishing career writing hit songs, but it wasn't until her personal life began to crack that she managed to find her true voice.
Carole King (now in her early 70s) received four Grammy Awards for her 1972 album "Tapestry." She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
Casting Notes: Tony-winner Jessie Mueller played her final performance on 3/6/15. The role of Carole King is now performed by Canadian actress and musical-theater vet Chilina Kennedy ("Jesus Christ Superstar").
"Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" is directed by Marc Bruni. Bruni has served as Associate Director on ten Broadway productions, but this will be his Broadway debut as a Director.
The result is a very mixed bag. The musical numbers are great fun, presented with style and humor. The show's book registers mostly as a series of interruptions. While not exactly amateurish, it aims very low, settling for the tried and trite. A big boost comes, though, from the warmly natural portrayal of King by Jesse Mueller, who also possesses a lovely, supple singing voice. If you go to "Beautiful" for the songs, you'll probably have a great time. Just don't expect anything more.
Insipid..."Beautiful" [has] a sumptuous score and a lackluster story that fails to do something the singer-songwriter did proudly - feel honest. None of this is the fault of Mueller, who plays King with genuine feeling and a lovely voice. The injection of [another songwriting] couple creates more songs, but muddies the plot. Saddest of all, there are moments in the script where another, better musical is hiding. Too bad that's as close to something beautiful this show ever gets.

As a baby boomer, Carole King and her music from Tapestry were at the center of my music universe in the 60s and 70s. Beautiful gave me the emotional insights into her life story that explains why her lyrics and performance are so powerful and heart felt. "Carole" and the entire cast were extremely talented musicians and actors, making the story and the songs come alive, allowing me to relive the music and culture of the 70s. Left the theater with a full heart and renewed admiration for this music icon.

The show was great and worth the money. I really appreciate the concierge service in which I was personally contacted before the seats were selected to inform me of what the options were..We had two orchestra seats on the aisle and with slight stadium style seating in the theater, the sightlines were excellent...
