"Tootsie" is based on the 1982 comedy film about a talented actor who, being difficult to work with due to his perfectionism, has no choice but to take on an identity as a woman in order to get roles. Directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Dustin Hoffman, the film premiered in December 1982 and received widespread critical acclaim. It was also a box office hit and it received many accolades including a Golden Globe Award and 10 Academy Award nominations. The musical made its world premiere try-out at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago in September 2018.
The musical stars Tony nominee Santino Fontana ("Cinderella"), best known for playing Greg on the TV series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" and as the voice behind Prince Hans in Disney's 2013 animated film "Frozen." The cast also includes Lilli Cooper ("Spongebob Squarepants"), Sarah Stiles ("Hand to God"), John Behlmann, Andy Grotelueschen, Julie Halston, Reg Rogers, and Tony winner Michael McGrath ("Nice Work If You Can Get It). Tony nominee Scott Ellis ("She Loves Me," "Bernhardt/Hamlet") directs.
