A revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical that follows composer Frank, his best friend-lyricist, ex-wife, and an unrequited platonic friend back in time to their idealistic beginnings.
From the producers: Following its triumphant "Into the Woods," Roundabout’s company in residence, Fiasco Theater, reimagines its next Stephen Sondheim creation. With Fiasco’s one-of-a-kind imagination, this audacious musical about a trio of showbiz friends who fall apart and come together over 20 years emerges as newly personal and passionate. Ben Brantley of The New York Times calls Fiasco “a force to reckon with in American theater.” Roundabout welcomes this ensemble back for this emotionally rich new production that confronts the pains and pleasures of fame, fortune, and old friends.
"Merrily We Roll Along" is based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The musical ran on Broadway for 52 previews and 16 performances in 1981 and marked the end of the Harold Prince-Stephen Sondheim collaborations until "Bounce" in 2003. Throughout the years, the musical has been staged with numerous changes, with Sondheim contributing new songs to several of the show's incarnations.
Roundabout named Fiasco Theater its company in residence after collaborating with them on their acclaimed, paired-down production of "Into the Woods" in 2015. "Merrily We Roll Along" has been developed at the theatre through multiple workshops and readings. The staging will showcase a small ensemble cast made up of Manu Narayan, Brittany Bradford, Jessie Austrian, Ben Steinfeld, Paul L. Coffey, and Emily Young.
What's the Roundabout? One of the great nonprofit dreadnoughts of the New York theater scene, the Roundabout has three Broadway venues and an Off-Broadway stage in midtown. Prominent artists are usually engaged, significant work is usually done, and even at the smallest of the theaters, the work has the uniform quality that one would expect from such a large and prominent shop.
