From the producers: Paint it red. So begins Lydia's wild idea to invigorate her Rust Belt town. But when a whip-smart entrepreneur co-opts her scheme, a precarious rivalry is born. A battle for the town's soul ensues, causing its obsessive mayor, its defiant matriarch, and the rest of its residents to question who they are and where they're headed.
Author Greg Pierce's work has been produced at numerous regional theatres across the country. His musical collaboration with John Kander, "Kid Victory," premiered Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 2017. His plays "Her Requiem" and "Slowgirl" were both staged at Lincoln Center Theater.
The world premiere of "Cardinal" features Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky ("Veep"), Adam Pally ("Happy Endings"), and Emmy nominee Becky Ann Baker ("Girls"). Completing the cast are Alex Hurt, Stephen Park and Eugene Young. Drama Desk winner Kate Whoriskey ("Sweat," "The Miracle Worker") directs.
What's Second Stage? Second Stage is a long-running producing organization with a recently redesigned Off-Broadway theater in the heart of the midtown theater district, and a smaller space (the company's original home) on the Upper West Side. Established as a 'Second Stage' for shows that didn't find an audience the first time around, the company now combines revivals with new work, and several of its shows have recently made the jump to larger houses across the street. The fare is sometimes a bit racy, but often very approachable...call it quirkiness with an edge. More here.
