A new play that follows an “army” of pre-teen competitive dancers vying to take the top prize at the Boogie Down Grand Prix in Tampa Bay.
From the producers: Somewhere in America, an army of pre-teen competitive dancers plots to take over the world. And if their new routine is good enough, they’ll claw their way to the top at the Boogie Down Grand Prix in Tampa Bay. But in Clare Barron’s raucous pageant of ambition and ferocity, these young dancers have more than choreography on their minds, because every plié and jeté is a step toward finding themselves, and a fight to unleash their power.
Author Clare Barron's play "You Got Older" received a Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Play and an Obie Award for Playwriting. Her other works include "I’ll Never Love Again" and "Baby Screams Miracle." "Dance Nation" earned Barron the 2017 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the oldest and largest prize exclusively for women playwrights. The play was previously a co-winner for The 2016 Relentless Award given by the American Playwriting Foundation in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The cast of "Dance Nation" includes Purva Bedi, Eboni Booth, Camila Canó-Flaviá, Ellen Maddow, Christina Rouner, Thomas Jay Ryan, Dina Shihabi, Lucy Taylor, and Ikechukwu Ufomadu. Obie winner Lee Sunday Evans directs and choreographs. What's Playwrights Horizons?
PH is a long-running Off-Broadway theatre on West 42nd that develops new plays by both veteran scribes and folks just off the radish truck (admittedly, the radish truck might have made a stop at an MFA playwriting program). The shows are produced in the company's state-of-the-art venues on West 42nd Street, with production standards equal to the best of Off-Broadway....generally, nothing too conceptual or provocative, just interesting plays, well rendered.
