Primary Stages presents a uniquely curated selection of three one-act plays by master writer A.R. Gurney.
From the producers: The plays specifically chosen for this special engagement include: "The Love Course," an observation of the culminating meeting of an undergraduate romantic literature course, co-taught by two of academia’s most eccentric professors; "The Rape of Bunny Stuntz," an enigmatic story of an overburdened woman anxiously trying to keep her personal life from the throes of chaos while leading a rowdy community meeting; and the titular "Final Follies," the last chapter in A.R. Gurney’s oeuvre of short plays examining WASP life in America, about a forlorn Manhattanite searching for the key to adulthood in the most truly, and literally, adult place imaginable.
Author A.R. Gurney is known for his many works, including "The Dining Room," "Sweet Sue ,"The Cocktail Hour," and for his Pulitzer Prize nominated play "Love Letters." His series of plays about upper-class WASP life in contemporary America have been called "penetratingly witty studies of the WASP ascendancy in retreat. In 2006, Gurney was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 2016 he was was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Obie Awards. Gurney died in 2017 at the age of 86.
The cast of "Final Follies" includes Obie Award winner Betsy Aidem, Colin Hanlon, Mark Junek, Piter Marek, Greg Mullavey and Deborah Rush. David Saint ("Tartuffe") directs.What is Primary Stages?
Primary Stages is an excellent Off-Broadway producing company. Their 2007 production of Horton Foote's "Dividing the Estate" went on to have a very successful run on Broadway. In 2008, Primary Stages was honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work. More here
