Two gifted young men compete for a life-changing scholarship at an elite university when they are confronted with their shared past.
From the producers: Cristofer and Clarence are two gifted students from the South Bronx. After two years at a local community college being coached by faculty members, the young men are competing for a life-changing scholarship at an elite northeast university. During a campus visit, the young men are unexpectedly confronted with their shared past while trying to break through a system that seems designed to keep them on the outside.
Author Lucy Thurber’s plays include "The Insurgents," "Ashville," "Stay," "Scarcity," "Killers and Other Family" and "Where We’re Born." Thurber is MCC Theater’s Youth Company Playwriting Lab Director, and "Transfers" is inspired by some of the young artists who participate in the program. The play was originally presented by New York Stage and Film and Vassar in the Powerhouse Season, summer 2016.
The cast of "Transfers" features Ato Blankson-Wood and Juan Castano at the two students. Castano reprises his role from the original production. Rounding out the cast are Leon Addison Brown, Glenn Davis and Samantha Soule. Jackson Gay directs.
What's MCC Theater? MCC Theater is a well-connected Off-Broadway company...this perhaps due to the 'day jobs' of the intendants, who are major casting directors and producers on larger stages in the city. MCC's productions are almost always marked by a very high standard of casting and technical production. The company's production of "reasons to be pretty" moved to Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award in 2008. More here.
